What is SkillBuild?

The Skillbuild competition is organised by CITB and has been running for more than 45 years.

The competition sees the very best in construction talent compete against each other to be crowned the SkillBuild winner in their chosen craft occupation.

SkillBuild consists of a number of regional heats and a National Final for the following ten craft occupations:

  • Bricklaying

  • Cabinet making

  • Carpentry

  • Dry walling systems

  • Joinery

  • Painting and decorating

  • Plastering

  • Roofing

  • Stonemasonry

  • Wall and floor tiling

There are two competitions that form the SkillBuild competition:

Senior competition

The Senior competition is designed for those who are studying a minimum of NVQ level 2 in their chosen craft occupation.

Senior competitors may have the opportunity to progress to the National Final.

New Entrant competition

The New Entrant competition is designed for students in their first year of training, or for those studying for a diploma or similar introductory qualification.

Regional heats

Regional SkillBuild heats are held over one day at various colleges throughout the UK from April to June each year.

When the heats have been completed, the highest scoring competitors (this may not necessarily be the heat winners) will have the opportunity to progress through to the SkillBuild National Final.

The National Final is a three-day competition and currently held as part of the Skills Show at the NEC Birmingham.

Finalists at the SkillBuild National Final may also have the opportunity to go on to represent the United Kingdom in international skills competitions such as EuroSkills and WorldSkills.

The 2017 SkillBuild National Final will once again be held at the

NEC Birmingham, and will take place between 16-18 November.
